What Is Chinese Age?
Chinese age, also known as Xu Sui (่ๅฒ), is a traditional age counting method used in Chinese culture. A person is considered 1 year old at birth, and everyone gains one year of age at Chinese New Year, not on their birthday.
Chinese Age vs Western Age
In the Western system, age increases on a personโs birthday. In contrast, the Chinese age system adds a year at birth and another year each time Chinese New Year occurs.
Example
- Born in 2000
- Western age in 2024: 24
- Chinese age in 2024 (after Chinese New Year): 25
